Have You Ever Written a Letter to Yourself?

Write Yourself a Love Letter

I love writing letters to myself. I get gangster with my ability to be creative in my letter writing! Here are some examples of how I write to myself and how I find this useful.

Letter to my past self 1: There may be the little child in my past that experienced things or participated in things that appear to be horrible.  My memory of them is only of the bad events and how terrible I felt. I cannot create good memories and feel compassion for who I was or what happened to me.  I want to let that little girl know that she is loved. She was on a journey that was filled with some deep dark things, but she got me to where I stand today. I am grateful for her having made it through - scars (mental/physical/spiritual) and all. I can stand here loving her when she didn’t feel lovable. I can offer to her what she needs in this now moment. I can lift her up out of her pain and hold her in sweet kindness and compassion, knowing that I am standing in the light now. This letter is very healing and compassionate.

Letter to my past self 2: My inner child no longer needs me to hold her as a victim in need of healing. She is a hero in my hero journey.  Thank you Joseph Campbell for letting me know about the Hero’s Journey and thank you Luke Skywalker for showing me that a hero doesn’t always feel like it throughout the entire journey. I send a letter to my inner child thanking her for being that hero for me. Thanking her for everything she is and was, because I stand in this now moment with great love and gratitude for her life! When I see my past self as a hero, I realize that I am the hero for my future self. As the hero is on a JOURNEY and doesn’t stop being a hero! This is very powerful.

Letter from my future self 1: There may be a goal I want to work on, but don’t know how I can do it. Maybe I don’t believe it is possible. I want to, but don’t believe it is possible. My future self - from any time in the future I want to choose, writes me a letter I can read now. She thanks me for everything I am and will be, because she stands in this now moment with great love and gratitude for her life! She knows the road ahead. She can encourage me to not give up, because she/I can do hard things! She has already made the goal and is ready for me to make mistakes and fall FORWARD. She knows I might want to quit, but she encourages me to keep going, because she is walking with me all the way to the finish line! I can start tapping into the energy that this letter provides me now. If my future self is confident, then I can create confidence now. If my future self is capable and loving, then I can create that now. It is very powerful.

Letter from my future self 2: Maybe I have an upcoming event that I am afraid of, worried, or anxious about. Maybe I am trying to get through the weekend family reunion without all the craziness I usually experience. My future self is my Monday self. She writes to tell me all the things I do well this weekend. She tells me that I am faced with challenges, but I don’t see them as that - they are chopportunities (challenging opportunities) instead. She tells me that I look for ways to find humor in the family chaos. She tells me that I act with service to others instead of service to self. She tells me that I find someone who is in need of kindness and show them that when I used to bristle and complain. This letter is impactful for events that are right on the horizon. If I am trying to go through something, but don’t believe I can or know how, guess who does believe in me? The future self who got through it. She knows how! This is very powerful and can be used often.

Gratitude Letter to my future self: I write a gratitude letter to my future selves letting them know that I am aware that my thoughts and beliefs now directly affect them in the future. I am willing to do hard things, because I love my future self enough to invest in myself now. I thank them for being there in the future and let them know I look forward to stepping into their energy when I get there.  Gratitude letters are very powerful.
